WhatsApp has recently introduced a series of exciting new features aimed at enhancing the video calling experience for its users. With these updates, the platform is set to compete more effectively with other video conferencing tools while providing a more engaging and interactive environment for users.
Expanded Participant Limit: WhatsApp has increased the maximum number of participants in video calls to 32 people. This change allows for larger group interactions, making it ideal for virtual meetings, family gatherings, or social events. Previously, mobile users could only host 32 participants, while desktop users were limited to 16 or 18 depending on their operating system.
Screen Sharing with Audio Support: Building on the screen-sharing feature introduced last year, WhatsApp now allows users to share audio alongside their screens during video calls. This enhancement enables participants to watch videos together or share presentations more effectively, fostering a collaborative atmosphere.
Speaker Spotlight Feature: To improve the flow of conversation during group calls, WhatsApp has added a speaker spotlight feature. This automatically highlights the participant currently speaking, ensuring that their video feed appears prominently on the screen. This feature aims to reduce confusion in larger calls where multiple participants may be talking simultaneously.
Enhanced Call Quality with MLow Codec: WhatsApp has implemented the Meta Low Bitrate (MLow) codec, designed to improve call reliability even in areas with poor network connectivity or on older devices. This proprietary codec is expected to deliver better audio quality while maintaining lower computational demands compared to previous codecs.
Filters and Background Options: In addition to functionality improvements, WhatsApp is also introducing fun elements like filters and backgrounds for video calls. Users can choose from various filters—such as Warm, Cool, and Vintage—and backgrounds that include options like Beach and Sunset. These features aim to make video calls more personal and visually appealing.
Touch Up and Low Light Options: To enhance user experience further, WhatsApp will offer touch-up features that improve lighting and overall appearance during calls. This is particularly beneficial for users in low-light environments.
These updates mark a significant step forward for WhatsApp as it continues to evolve as a versatile communication platform. By enhancing video calling capabilities with increased participant limits, improved audio-visual features, and engaging visual options, WhatsApp is not only keeping pace with competitors like Zoom and Microsoft Teams but also catering to the growing demand for virtual communication tools. As these features roll out over the coming weeks, users can look forward to a more dynamic and enjoyable video calling experience on WhatsApp.
